Cascade was originally designed as an age where all the architecture existed on a cliff side interspersed with immense waterfalls. Later it was changed into a quasi-Roman area with occasional waterfalls, pools, and lakes. We were to have 2 ages that made exceptional use of water. The other was to be an island with a giant tree. These ages put extremely heavy demands on the R&D dept. as there was no precedent for making convincing 3d water in any first person game. Also, since it was a Myst game it would have to be photo-realistic water at that.

I was the Head R&D artist on Myst IV. My Job was to make impossible things possible. In general, I created all the special effects, and worked with programming to implement new technologies into the game that would facilitate design requirements.
